It looks like the British Columbia Supreme Court will be ruling on the legality of polygamy. Of course, voluntaryism means any relation based on the mutual consent of all parties should be legal and lawful. This includes plural marriage.
That’s not to say that what’s happened among the Warren Jeffs group should be legal. As I understand it, several of their underage marriages were accompanied by the threat of violence. I believe this is symptomatic of what I’d call black-market polygamy. Polygamy that must hide and convert kids, often by force, at ever younger ages. This was not the case among the early Latter-day Saints and their practice of plural marriage. When it was legal and out in the open, there was no abuse.
