Hand Waving

My field is computer science, the home of the uncanny valley.  There is much hand waving devoted to the navigation of the uncanny valley.  There are far too many dabblers in robotics and virtual reality who want artificial general intelligence (AGI) to be a thing.  As a matter of confirmation bias, they want AGI to be true — they are doing wishful thinking about it.

Children’s Friends, Bullied Children, Adult Children-Parent Dynamics, & Raising Genders Equally (29m) Editor’s Break 070

Editor’s Break 070 has Skyler giving his commentary on the following topics: whether or not we should allow our teenage children to befriend homosexuals, how to help a child who’s being bullied at school, why adult children may never wish to see their parents again, three ways to raise both male and female children equally, and more.

Cakes, Guns, Discrimination, and Freedom of Association

Boycott (and “buycott”) reinforce “bad” (and “good”) behavior. I personally hope and expect that Dick’s and Walmart will pay a price for their decision to discriminate against would-be gun purchasers and against 18- to 21-year-olds, and that non-bigoted businesses will profit. And please, politicians: Stop grandstanding, get out of the way, and let the people sort these matters out for ourselves.

Learn How to Shoot Back

Many of the same people who have spent the last year accusing Trump and his supporters of being fascists, staging protests and rallies, shining a spotlight on the problem of sexual assault, and donning headgear resembling genitalia are now calling on that same government to forcibly disarm the population. Think about that for a moment…

Laws Don’t Deter Crime, They Create Crime

A major superstition maintained by those who believe in government (the state) is that without their laws, criminals will run rampant in the street preying on anybody and everybody who can’t personally defend themselves. Laws that prescribe harsh punishments on criminal behavior, it is believed, will deter most people from engaging in a life of crime. But I don’t believe that’s true. In fact, I believe the opposite is true: laws don’t deter crime, they create crime. How, you ask as you lean forward and rub your chin?

Not All Molestation is Sexual

Your “polite” neighbors believe cops have a legitimate function: to molest bad guys by stopping them from hurting people or violating property. And if they actually did that without molesting the rest of us, I wouldn’t be completely against policing. But they don’t– because they can’t. Molestation is built into the “job” and is a result of every encounter with them.

Is Honesty a Virtue?

Everyone desires human connection, and we are able to get a higher quality connection the more honest we are. So, it seems insane that people would desire to lie to anyone they would have a relationship with. Sure, people who want to use people to get something in the short run would be incentivized to lie, but why would someone lie to someone they desire to have a long term relationship with?

Sexual Harassment: A Keyhole Solution

Firms should adopt the speed dating paradigm.  Let everyone secretly record their feelings, if any, for their co-workers.  If the feelings are unrequited, no one ever finds out.  If the feelings are mutual, however, both parties receive official confirmation.  And unless they edit their recorded preferences, they waive their right to complain about (or sue over) unwanted attention from whoever they explicitly approved.
