What a Tragedy
When people are young and very small, when their appetites are most ripe for learning, we tell them “now these are the important books that responsible people read.” Then we proceed to rob them of the most important components of reading: getting to be the one who chooses the book, getting to be the one who chooses when reading should be done, and getting to be the one who decides what parts of the book are worth remembering.
Does Philosophy Apply?
It seems to me that one who would be subservient has abandoned wisdom. One does not need to be the wisest of the wise to love knowledge more than being mastered.
Faith in Your Former Reason
To me, faith is continuing to act on a belief you formed using your full logical powers in a moment when emotion tempts you to do otherwise. It’s faith in your own ability to arrive at a sound conclusion, and faith in your former resolve to stick with it even when it becomes costly.
Wisdom Is (Mostly) Invisible
If we are going to acknowledge wisdom in others and embody wisdom ourselves, we must not confine ourselves to visible wisdom – the wisdom of all our preconceptions. This wisdom is just the tip of the iceberg. We have to see further and deeper to see the wisdom of inaction and restraint.
One Thing We Shouldn’t Import from China: Its Education System
We should be careful that America does not become a society of obedient “little soldiers,” abdicating our individual liberty to the powers of the state under the guise that it’s good for us. High test scores may be commendable, but not if they come at such a high price.
