I count among my major influences several writers who specialize or specialized in detective fiction, aka pulp fiction.  I have come to consider many of the purveyors of this lurid fiction to be among the finest literary practitioners, literature producers, and philosophy masters.  Who are some of these knights of the pen?

Utah Case Highlights Need for Separation of Medicine and Law Enforcement

In July, Salt Lake City detective Jeff Payne violently abducted Alex Wubbels, a nurse at University of Utah Hospital. Most accounts don’t put it that way — they use the word “arrested” instead — but Wubbels was released without charges because Payne’s actions were clearly an extra-legal physical power play by a police officer who was angry at not getting his way.

Nice Monsters

Most serial killers are probably very nice. It’s how they gain the trust of their intended victims; getting them to let their guard down. If they weren’t nice, they would find it hard to get close enough to kill their victims up close and personal. But if you are being nice in order to facilitate violating people, you aren’t good. No matter how many people like you for your niceness.

Gang Members Attract Groupies

One day recently, at an event at the park, I was watching people gathering around a cop. Several seemed to be jostling for his attention. I couldn’t help but wonder what the attraction was. Then I remembered someone I know who idolizes the Mafia, and it clicked: Gang members attract groupies. Suddenly I started thinking of other examples of the same phenomenon.
