Nobody asked but …
I always asked, whenever I saw them, my children, my grandchildren, and now my great grandchildren, “What did you learn new today?” I wasn’t really after some specific answer, rather I was hoping to pass along the habit of inquiring. I often did get specific answers, and often I got two other rewards — a chance to talk with that younger person about something they were interested in, and a chance to learn something new myself. On the other hand, if one of them dodged the question or just said, “… nothing …,” then I asked, “how is that possible?” The invariable result was that each reconsidered, deciding that it was easier to think about the first question than the second. This was always done in a non-demanding, non-argumentative way.
