Whence the Honduran Caravan?
I don’t know a ton about the Honduran caravan, but it doesn’t seem like some sort of spontaneous movement. I can’t imagine the motivations come from outside of the US political system.
1. The logistics are highly improbable. People walking thousands of miles with women and children seems insane. Food, water, disease, etc? Seems far fetched.
2. This would expose yourself to significant political risk. Mexico is more strict with immigration than the US. Why would these people assume Mexico wouldn’t end this? Why would they assume making themselves more visible (rather than less visible) has a higher degree of success? Why would they assume they will land anywhere except stuck at a border or in a desert with nothing?
3. It is hard to imagine this scenario for another country. It is because of the split politics of the US regarding immigration that this seems like a good idea to someone.
I think I can go on.
I’ve watched almost nothing on this and have only read several articles and Facebook posts. It is theoretically possible that this is some spontaneous thing planned by immigrants. I am just skeptical.
I do agree that I think this benefits republicans more than democrats. However, I doubt republicans would sponsor this, but maybe I am wrong. It seems more like a misjudgment by a pro-immigration group.
Either way, I don’t really care. I just think the stated motivations don’t exactly add up.
