What If…?

Some are now giving credit to the “militia” who showed up at Cliven Bundy’s besieged Nevada ranch this weekend for turning back the federal enforcers, but I’m afraid I remain unconvinced. What would have happened if the gang of tax-fattened government hitmen had actually unleashed the fury of their amassed weapons of war against the band of protestors and militia members who had assembled? Would the militia have stood their ground and returned fire? Somehow I doubt it.

When Captain Parker gave his famous command to his assembled militiamen on Lexington Green, “Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here!” what followed was the “shot heard ’round the world” and a brief skirmish in which one British soldier was slightly wounded and eight militiamen were killed and ten wounded. The militiamen didn’t hold their ground and return fire, you see; they attempted to disperse and were unable to effectively resist the onslaught from their attackers. Suffice it to say that in that initial confrontation, the militia was severely outnumbered, outgunned, and outmaneuvered by the invading British regulars.

I can certainly appreciate the theory of the militia, and the idea of standing against the tyranny of the federal mercenaries who are invading and occupying our states, cities, towns, and property is definitely appealing, but I fear that without proper planning and equipment, such efforts will prove no less futile than those of the militiamen gunned down on Lexington Green.
