On Property

In a sick and twisted way, property is a form of slavery. No, I do not mean that claiming property rights is enslaving to other people. What I mean is that claiming property rights in something means that you must either hold fast to or abandon it when it’s being threatened. An example: when you drive around a fancy car, you must take pains to park it in safe places lest it be stolen. Another example: when you own a house, you must pay your so-called “property tax” and “income taxes” lest your house be stolen. Either you must make sacrifices of time and money, ie. your life and your autonomy, to secure your property, or it might be taken from you. In this way, property ownership is a liability, and as such, a form of self-enslavement. Some societies are safer than others, but I don’t think any society on earth is free of villains who call themselves “government” who won’t hesitate to rob you of whatever property you’ve managed to acquire, if they so desire. Something to think about, isn’t it? And that’s today’s two cents.
