Impossible Simplicity

It’s incredibly fundamental and basic, isn’t it? Don’t physically attack anyone, and don’t steal or destroy what belongs to them. And aside from those two rules, do whatever the fuck you please. And don’t ask permission.

If you ask an average person on the street if they agree with this arrangement, after perhaps a few moments to absorb and consider it, they’ll likely tell you they do. But it goes without saying that their amity dissolves just as soon as they keep walking. Down the street, that is. With regard to their professed sympathy towards what they probably don’t even realize as the sum total of libertarianism, they seldom, if ever, walk that walk.

No, they vote, work government jobs, raise little objection to paying taxes, cheer for police, and lobby the sociopaths calling themselves Government for everything from more gun laws, to state-provided healthcare, to draconian environmental regulations, an end to petroleum fuels, and so on and on and on.

Impossible, they say (even after having just agreed to the ethical soundness of libertarian behavior) – the world just isn’t that simple.

Never considering, of course, just who insists on making it that way.
