The “Nuclear Option”?

Last week, American-Jewish billionaire Sheldon Adelson suggested that the US military should drop a nuclear bomb in the middle of the Iranian desert in order to show Iran that they mean business. He further suggested that the next bomb be dropped on Tehran if Iran refuses to comply with US demands. Now I understand that Mr. Adelson isn’t actually an elected official, but his views are not that far removed from some of D.C.’s more outspoken hawks. In addition, he is one of the richest men in the world and a major donor for Republicans such as Mitt Romney and for the “Foundation for the Defense of Democracies” which is a think tank dedicated (in my opinion) to launching WWIII. While we can certainly hope that cooler heads prevail and that megalomaniacs like Sheldon Adelson are not able to use the US military as their own personal hit squad to murder millions of innocent people simply because of where they were born or the religion they practice, the fact that doing so is even considered an option serves as a grim reminder of the inherent threat of the state and its arsenal.
