On Veteran’s Day

I see no reason to limit Veteran’s Day to a celebration of military veterans. Their “service” wasn’t really any different than the “service” performed by countless people in thousands of different occupations (besides their pay being funded involuntarily, of course). Service performed, no doubt, under the promise of a return benefit. Military veterans “sacrifice” no more than any other kind of veteran. They take certain risks and perform certain tasks that they individually value less than the benefit they receive in return, be it monetary or sentimental, or both. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t be “serving” in the military. So this Veteran’s Day I celebrate everyone who’s recognized the value in giving something of less value in return for something of more, and have done so consistently. They are market veterans, and I celebrate them. And that’s today’s two cents.

Skyler.
