On Occupancy-and-Use

The occupancy-and-use property norm espoused by left anarchists seems to assume that there’s only one plot of land (in total) for everyone on earth, and anyone trying to hoard it for themselves is an evil capitalist pig and may be forthwith discarded by any means necessary. Of course, the earth is mostly empty, and if everyone alive today (7+ billion people) lived at the density level of New York, we could all fit in Texas. For this reason, the occupancy-and-use property norm makes virtually zero sense. It’s as if left anarchists see the result of someone else’s efforts at appropriating land and desire to take it rather than appropriating their own. They want the benefit of use without any of the physical or entrepreneurial effort. Or so it seems to me. And that’s today’s two cents.

Skyler.
