Indifferent to Human Suffering

As horrifying as the news often is, what is even more terrifying is the apathy (and even glee) with which the news is often received. The lack of compassion and empathy for the millions of people who have been and are being murdered, tortured, brutalized, kidnapped, enslaved, and extorted by the state and its enforcers is truly staggering. How have so many people become so indifferent to human suffering? I don’t feel at all optimistic regarding the future of mankind.
